I flew in the cockpit of a real life floats version of a Turbo DHC-3T Otter in Canada about eight years ago, which had a new PT6A engine installed very recently. This was up at Green Lake, adjacent to Whistler, Canada (Site of the 2010 Winter Olympics). I sat in the co-pilots seat (with no controls) and my wife was in the cabin with about 5 additional passengers. The flight in the summer was magnificent. The Turbo DHC-3T Otter was very powerful and climbed up to altitudes effortlessly. The mountain flight was about 45-60 minutes in length with scattered (1-2/8) cloud coverage. The pilot nicely demoed the full beta (reverse thrust) on landing in a very short distance in the lake and we had a long (5-10 minute) taxi back to the dock. I loved the flight with the mountains with what seemed the mountains to be an arms length away and was just magnificent. Unfortunately, my wife a newcomer to General Aviation (G.A.) was highly nauseated during the flight (I had to check-in with her several times to make sure she didn’t need a vomit bag) and was for quite some time afterword. The flight was rather expensive too about $175+ for each of us, a little bit under $400 U.S.D. total with taxes, etc. Regardless, it was one of the top G.A. flights I’ve ever had.
I was a beta tester for this aircraft. The simulation detail and effects, including sounds, of the PT6-34 are the first of its kind in P.C. based flight simulation for the turboprop PT6 engine.
The beta range (reverse thrust) of the PT6-34 engine is exquisitely modeled and simulated for very short landing rolls (distances) on land or water.
